Robinson-Weeks-Robinson Scholarship Fund: A Legacy of Excellence and a Vision for the Future

Welcome to the inaugural article of our new newsletter, a platform where we aim to share insights, stories, and updates about the Robinson-Weeks-Robinson Scholarship Fund (RWRSF). This Fund isn't just an embodiment of a rich history; it's a beacon for a promising future, guiding aspiring young minds toward careers that promise growth, innovation, and service. Founded in 1989, the RWRSF commemorates the exceptional lives and contributions of three African American physicians - Dr. Paul T. Robinson, Dr. Samuel A. Weeks, and Dr. Julius C. Robinson - who dedicated their lives not only to the health of those in West Contra Costa County but also to inspiring youth in their community. Over more than thirty years, the Fund has been a pivotal force, granting over 250 scholarships and shaping the future of many aspiring students. Dr. Paul T. Robinson, born in Louisville, Arkansas, was more than a general surgeon and family physician; he was a visionary leader. After graduating from Meharry Medical College, he moved to Richmond, California, in 1953. His contributions went beyond the medical field, extending into civil rights, thereby becoming a respected and influential figure in the community. Dr. Samuel A. Weeks' journey began on the island of Barbados, West Indies. A Howard University Medical School alumnus, Dr. Weeks dedicated over 40 years as a general practitioner to the people of Richmond. His commitment and care for his patients left an indelible mark on the community. Dr. Julius C. Robinson, following in his father, Dr. Paul T. Robinson's footsteps, also graduated from Meharry Medical College. His more than 20 years in the medical field, specifically as a general surgeon, were distinguished by his role as vice president of the medical staff at Brookside Hospital, where he was the first African American executive. These three trailblazers not only provided essential healthcare but also actively encouraged local high school students to pursue careers in health sciences. Their legacy is the heart of the RWRSF's mission: to foster and support the aspirations of West Contra Costa County's youth in the fields of science, technology, electronics, and math (STEM). Our commitment, echoing that of our founders, lies in nurturing a new generation of leaders, thinkers, and healers. The RWRSF is wholly supported by volunteer-led fundraising efforts, emphasizing the community's role in sustaining this empowering mission. As we look back with admiration at our past, we are equally, if not more, excited about our future. This Fund is more than a legacy; it's a launching pad for the next generation of professionals who will continue to break barriers and explore new frontiers in STEM fields. We invite you to join us — not just in remembering the great works of Drs. Robinson, Weeks, and Robinson, but in committing to a future where every bright, motivated student in West Contra Costa County has the support they need to pursue their dreams in STEM. Your participation and financial contributions are not just donations; they are investments in a future rich with possibilities, innovation, and enduring community impact. Let's work together to build this future, honoring a remarkable past and nurturing an even more remarkable tomorrow.
